Causes of motorcycle accidents

Motorbikes are a convenient mode of transport for getting you from A to B. However, unlike other modes of transport, they do not provide the same level of protection. For example, motorcycles lack safety features such as seat belts and airbags and therefore put motorcyclists at a greater risk. As well as the lack of safety features, their small profile and high-speed capabilities make motorcyclists extremely vulnerable on UK roads.

According to road safety charity Brake, every 20 minutes a person is either killed or seriously injured on UK roads. Furthermore, their analysis demonstrates that bikers are 63 times more likely to be seriously injured or killed in an accident than car drivers.

Whilst there are various reasons for motorcycle accidents, the most common include:

• Motorists filtering
• Unsafe lane changes
• Road spillages such as diesel (and other substances of a hazardous nature)
• Potholes or defective road surfaces
• Opening car doors
• Exiting junctions

Serious accidents can also be caused as a result of negligence from other motorists. Motorcyclists are the most at-risk group on the road from intoxicated and distracted drivers. Additionally, inexperienced drivers also contribute to the growing number of motorcycle accidents occurring in the UK each year.

Have you or someone you know been involved in a motorcycle accident?

Motorcycle accidents are common and can result in severe consequences. The impact of a motorcycle accident can leave the motorcyclist with both physical damage; directly after the incident the injured party may suffer from traumatic brain injuries, fractures,  spinal cord injuries, and more. These injuries can be life-changing and may require a lifetime of medical treatment that can cost tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds. As well as the physical injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident, being involved in a motorcycle accident can also have a detrimental impact on the mental health of the motorcycle accident victim. Physical injuries suffered can immobilise the injured party and leave them unable to go about their day-to-day life.
